Google CEO Sundar Pichai had announced in 2015 that free WiFi stations in India would be set up soon. His vision included 100 spots in the country. The initiative aimed to connect millions of passengers that frequent these stations on a daily basis.
23 free WiFi stations in India have been set up so far as a part of the first phase of the project. The project has become real with partnership help from RailTel, the telecom wing of the Indian railway. These free WiFi stations in India currently cater to over two million people.
This great project has been lauded as one of the most successful initiatives of the country. The works are still in the early phases and will even get to be a bigger success once it launches in its full fledged glory.
Google’s selected sketch of the 100 stations is expected to cover nearly 10 million people as a whole.
“It’s still early days, but we’re really happy about this progress towards making high-speed Wi-Fi available to more than 10 million Indians every day. In the months ahead, we’ll continue to work in close partnership with Indian Railways and RailTel, to reach 85 more stations this year, and eventually 400 spanning the whole of India,” explains a Google Spokesperson about this project.
According to users who experienced the free WiFi stations in India, the speeds are way better than the paid services in the two tier cities. Remote regions in the country suffer greatly from poor internet connectivity. But the speed at the stations in the remote regions are backed up with a 1 Gbps plus fiber back haul with multiple Access Points to provide high speeds in all regions.

If your city is in the list you can go to the stations and get unrestricted high speed WiFi on your laptop or smartphone.
