Xiaomi after its smartphones success sales is now venturing into new markets to remind everyone that it is not just to do with phones alone. The Chinese smartphone major recently dethroned Samsung as China’s top smartphone maker in 2014 and is now getting into action cameras, a market dominated by GoPro currently.
Xiaomi’s latest GoPro-like action camera is called the Yi Action camera (official English name) and is expected to be sold at a fraction rate of its U.S. rival. The Xiaomi Yi Action camera is also made by the same partnering company of Xiaomi (Xiaoyi) that even makes Xiaomi Yi home camera. This Yi Action camera from Xiaomi can connect to other Xiaomi devices through a separate app.
Xiaomi’s ‘Yi Action Camera’ is sold for 399 CNY (around $64/ Rs. 3,900) much cheaper than GoPro’s enter level camera, the GoPro Hero that is priced around $130 (around Rs. 8,000). The limitation over here with the Yi Action Camera is that it is for now only available in China (may be to start with). It can be bought from the company’s online store, Mi.com store via Xiaomi’s usual flash sale style.
Xiaomi Yi Action camera’s features:
Ok, now to talk about its specs and features, this action camera of Xiaomi with 16-megapixel camera using Sony’s highly-rated Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor can record videos at 1080p (60 frames per second). This on paper seems to be superior to the GoPro Hero that can record at 1080p30 or 720p60 with a five-megapixel camera.
Its memory also is more as it gets 64 GB allocation that is twice as large as Hero that only holds 32GB. On terms of weight, the Yi Action Camera weighing 72 grams is lighter than GoPro Hero that is 111 gram. Also the Yi Action Camera is claimed to hold a battery that is marginally large. Similar to Hero, Xiaomi’s Action Camera can go up to 40 meters underwater being waterproof, the most important criteria required for any camera that is needed to be taken under water. But something missing in Xiaomi’s Action Camera is that there is no casing or rigging available with the camera that needs to be put when going underwater unlike GoPros that ships the camera with some basic accessories. It is not sure if Xiaomi’s camera doesn’t need a case, still it needs to be confirmed by the company.
What can be expected with this camera is a selfie stick mount, to attract those who wish to take photos of themselves. There are two deals offered by the company with this camera, by paying 399 Yuan ($64) only the camera is supplied and on paying 499 Yuan ($80), a selfie rod is given along with the camera. Apart from this it is claimed that the product can be strapped to anything, like even a cat (as shown in the picture below).
The company as of now is selling the Yi Action Camera only in China and it might take some time for it to reach the international market and this happens with most of Xiaomi’s offbeat products.
